Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 large ripe banana mashed
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup or honey optional
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup water optional, to adjust consistency
Optional Toppings
  • ½ banana sliced
  • 2 tablespoons chopped walnuts or pecans
  • 1 tablespoon peanut butter or almond butter
  • 1 teaspoon chia seeds
  • Fresh blueberries or strawberries
  • Extra maple syrup as desired
  • A pinch of ground cinnamon

Method

  1. Peel the ripe banana and mash it in a small bowl with a fork until mostly smooth.
  2. Pour the milk into a medium saucepan and warm over medium heat until it begins to steam gently. Avoid a vigorous boil.
  3. Stir in the rolled oats, mashed banana, ground cinnamon, vanilla extract, and salt.
  4. Reduce the heat to medium-low and cook for about 5–8 minutes, stirring frequently, until the oats soften and the mixture becomes creamy.
  5. Add the optional maple syrup or honey if desired. If the oatmeal becomes too thick, stir in a little milk or water until it reaches your preferred consistency.
  6. Divide the oatmeal between two bowls. Top with sliced banana, chopped nuts, peanut butter, chia seeds, or fresh berries.
  7. Serve warm.
Food Safety Note:
  1. Refrigerate leftover oatmeal promptly in a covered container. Do not leave cooked oatmeal at room temperature for more than 2 hours.

Notes

  • Use a ripe banana with brown spots for the sweetest flavor.
  • Old-fashioned rolled oats provide a creamy texture while retaining some chew.
  • Stir regularly to prevent the oatmeal from sticking to the saucepan.
  • Keep the heat moderate to prevent milk from scorching or boiling over.
  • Add milk or water gradually if the oatmeal becomes too thick.
